Live in the heart of London
Springboard into Europe

Perhaps you have considered traveling overseas but didn't know when the opportunity would present itself in your life.  Or perhaps you decided to jump at the opportunity to study overseas if the opportunity ever presented itself (but wasn't sure it ever would). Regardless, Jacksonville State University's long-time membership in the British Studies Consortium means that the option to study abroad, travel Europe, and know London--all while earning college credit--is now available to you.

The British Studies Consortium, administered through the University of Southern Mississippi for the last 35 years, is comprised of 14 universities.  Every summer, 125-150 students from consortium schools converge on the campus of King's College in South London near the Thames River, the Waterloo Tube Station, and the South Bank Arts Complex.  Besides serving as a physical base from which students receive a rigorous, active, and international educational experience, the residence hall provides unparalleled access to major London attractions.  The theatre district, Covent Garden, the Royal Festival Hall, the National Theatre, the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, and Westminster are all within easy walking distance.  Students can earn up to six credits from 20 different undergraduate and graduate courses in anthropology/sociology, art, computer science, criminal justice, English (three different courses), forensic science, geography, history, intercultural communication, international business (three different courses), journalism, political science, sports management, and theatre.

During mid-program, students leave London to pursue academic travel outside London in a portion of the program called LondonAWAY.  Although the destinations depend on the chosen classes, past destinations have included Edinburgh, Dublin, Normandy, Amsterdam, Paris, and Brussels.  During LondonAWAY, students may visit historical sites, businesses or factories, museums, and other venues pertinant to their areas of study.  Following LondonAWAY, students then take a mini-break from academics and spend another few days traveling, either independently or with friends, to sites of their choice around the British Isles or in Europe in general.  (Program fees do not include housing or travel during the mini-break.)

LondonAWAY and Europe Too!

What's the Cost? Can I Afford It?

Good questions!  Many options are available for students to finance their participation in the program, including accessing their own savings, family contributions, scholarships, financial aid, or combinations of these methods.  Individual situations differ, but in general it's smart to compare how much money you would normally spend on a traditional summer semester with the costs required for this program.  The 2014 price schedule is as follows::

Tuition, Fees, Housing, and Flight                                                                 Tuition, Fees, and Housing (no-flight)

Undergraduate: $7,399                                                                                     Undergraduate: $6,399

Graduate: $7,599                                                                                                 Graduate: $6,599

More information regarding financing options will be posted here when available.  Please see the "Costs and Deadlines" section regarding fianancing and financial aid at the British Studies link in the "Links and Contacts" section of this site.
